Many people will consider orthodontic treatment to straighten crooked teeth or if they want to move poorly-positioned teeth into better alignment. However, there are also many individuals who will be unaware that they have a "bad bite" or malocclusion (a result of extra teeth, missing teeth, crowded teeth or misaligned jaws) and will be referred to us by their dentist.
Our orthodontists, Dr. Pratik Sharma and Dr. Matthew Chia, are both members of the British Orthodontic Society and the European Orthodontic Society. They are experienced in carrying out comprehensive assessments to identify specific problems and are able to prescribe the most appropriate orthodontic treatments.
Until quite recently, metal braces have been the most popular option to treat and repair a set of crooked or gapped teeth. However, a variety of more aesthetically pleasing orthodontic treatments are now available at our dental practices. These include less noticeable ceramic braces such as CLARITY ® tooth-coloured braces, clear Invisalign ® braces and invisible lingual braces such as the Incognito ® System.
Orthodontic treatments are designed to correct malocclusion over a period of time and treatments may take anything from a few months to a few years to remedy a problem.
Most people associate orthodontic treatment with childhood. However, the correction of orthodontic problems can be undertaken at any age and the recent development of more aesthetically pleasing clear, ceramic and invisible braces has led to many more adults exploring and opting for orthodontic treatment.
Clarity ® brackets are made from ceramic materials. They are designed to blend in with your teeth and smile, so are far less noticeable than traditional braces.
The Invisalign ® treatment uses a series of aligners that are clear and virtually invisible. While traditional braces need to be retightened regularly, Invisalign ® patients need only visit our orthodontists when it is time to pick up a new set of clear aligners. Invisalign ® wearers reap all the orthodontic benefits of traditional braces without letting anyone know that they are undergoing an orthodontic treatment.
Lingual braces are fitted to the inner surfaces of your teeth and provide the most "invisible" type of orthodontic treatment. These are fixed braces which are able to achieve effective tooth movement but with the advantage of the braces not being visible. The Incognito™ system offers the highest patient comfort that is technically possible and both of our orthodontists are Incognito™ certified and able to provide this type of orthodontic treatment.
Damon System braces are self-ligating brackets which allow the teeth to move freely, quickly and comfortably. Unlike conventional braces, Damon braces do not require elastic ties to hold the wire in place. This results in less plaque collection, making the dental hygiene easier to maintain throughout treatment. This system often requires fewer adjustments resulting in less interruption to your daily schedule.
Traditional metal braces are still an option to treat and realign crooked or gapped teeth.
